The Monthly Digest: May
A roundup of things I've loved this month, from new restaurants and hotels to binge-worthy TV shows
I’m in disbelief at how quickly May has hurtled by…this is always one of my favourite months of the year: the spring weather is perfect in equal measure for quick European jaunts and exploring on home turf. This month has included my first ever visit to the glamorous Italian island of Capri, and a road trip through Somerset and Devon: both beautiful parts of the UK at this time of the year.
Read on for my favourite hotel stays and standout meals from the month, along with the binge-worthy TV shows I’ve enjoyed.
CULTURE I’ve loved:
TV Shows:
The Four Seasons
While some ensemble comedies can feel a little formulaic, Netflix’s The Four Seasons stands out as a refreshing take on marriage and friendship, with Tina Fey and Steve Carell leading a cast of hilarious and painfully relatable characters. Each couple of episodes brings the show’s group of friends back together for a seasonal vacation full of emotional upheaval and drama: it’s an enjoyable watch that has occasional laugh-out-loud moments.
Prime Target
This is the kind of fast-paced thriller that hooks you from the first scene, with Leo Woodall playing a gifted Cambridge mathematician whose research into prime numbers could unlock every computer in the world. The Apple TV series blends academic intrigue with high-stakes espionage, and while the plot can seem a little far-fetched at times, the varied filming locations and pacy storyline will continually keep you guessing what’s coming next.
HOTELS I’ve loved:
Despite visiting the Amalfi Coast a few times on previous trips, I’d never hopped across to Capri before. Where better to stay than glamorous La Palma, the oldest and most iconic hotel on the island, during my first visit? Thanks to recent acquisition and top-to-toe renovation by Oetker Collection, the hotel is refreshingly contemporary: think airy whitewashed suites kitted out with clever tech, pastel-toned furnishings and hand-painted frescoes across the communal spaces, and a sun-kissed pool framed by uber-chic parasols. There’s a beach club on a separate part of the island, three excellent restaurants for dining at, and even an in-house pasticceria, which serves some of the best sweets on the island. There are only 50 bedrooms here, so there’s a delightfully intimate and boutique feel to the property.
